ASUS AiCloud
ASUS routers' remote access feature that exposes your router to the internet
What is AiCloud?
AiCloud is a feature on ASUS routers that lets you access files on a USB drive plugged into your router from anywhere on the internet. It can also sync files between your router and cloud storage services and let you stream media remotely. Essentially, it turns your router into a small cloud server.
Think of it like setting up a file server in your home and then opening a door to the internet so you can reach it from work, from your phone, or from anywhere else. That convenience comes with risk, because the door is open to everyone, not just you.
Why it matters
When AiCloud is enabled, your router runs a web server that is accessible from the public internet. This significantly increases your router's attack surface, meaning there are more ways for someone to find and exploit a vulnerability. ASUS routers have had multiple critical security vulnerabilities in AiCloud over the years, some allowing attackers to access files or take control of the router without even needing a password.
Even when there are no known vulnerabilities, exposing any service to the internet carries inherent risk. Your router is the gateway to your entire home network, so compromising it gives an attacker access to every device in your home. Most people who have AiCloud enabled do not actively use it, meaning they are accepting extra risk for a feature that provides them no benefit.
What you can do
- Log into your ASUS router's admin page and navigate to the AiCloud settings to disable it
- If you need remote file access, consider a dedicated cloud storage service like Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud instead
- If you must access files on your home network remotely, set up a VPN server on your router (ASUS routers support this) rather than exposing AiCloud
- Keep your router's firmware updated, since ASUS regularly patches AiCloud vulnerabilities
- Check that the AiCloud mobile app is not re-enabling the feature after firmware updates
- Enable AiProtection on your ASUS router for an additional layer of defense if you choose to keep AiCloud active
What Network Weather shows you
Network Weather detects whether AiCloud is enabled on your ASUS router and flags it as a potential security risk since it exposes services to the internet.
