Disk Space

How much storage is available on your computer's drive

What is disk space?

Disk space is the total storage capacity of your computer's drive (whether it's a traditional hard drive or a modern SSD). It's where your operating system, applications, documents, photos, and everything else lives permanently.

Think of your disk as a filing cabinet. Unlike your desk (RAM), things stored in the filing cabinet stay there when you turn off the lights. But if the cabinet gets too full, you can't file anything new—and your computer may struggle to function.

Why it matters

Your computer needs free disk space to function properly. The operating system uses disk space for temporary files, virtual memory (when RAM fills up), and system updates. When disk space runs critically low:

  • Applications may crash or refuse to open
  • Your computer may become extremely slow
  • System updates may fail to install
  • You may not be able to save documents or download files

What you can do

Quick fixes:

  • Empty your Trash or Recycle Bin—deleted files still take up space until emptied
  • Clear your Downloads folder of files you no longer need
  • Delete old large files like videos, disk images (.dmg, .iso), or installer packages
  • Clear browser cache and downloads in your web browser settings

Long-term solutions:

  • Move photos and videos to cloud storage (iCloud, Google Photos, Dropbox)
  • Uninstall applications you no longer use
  • Use built-in storage management tools: "Storage" in Mac System Settings or "Storage Sense" in Windows
  • Consider an external drive for archiving large files you rarely access
  • If you're constantly running out of space, it may be time to upgrade to a larger drive
