What is the DTIM period?

DTIM stands for Delivery Traffic Indication Message. It is a setting in your WiFi router's beacon signal that tells sleeping devices how often they need to wake up and check for incoming data.

Think of it like a mail delivery schedule. If the mail carrier comes every hour, you can nap between deliveries. If the carrier comes every ten minutes, you have to keep getting up to check. The DTIM period controls how many beacon intervals pass between each "wake up and check" signal. A DTIM of 1 means devices wake up at every single beacon (usually every 102 milliseconds). A DTIM of 3 means they can sleep through two beacons and only wake up on the third.

Why it matters

Phones, tablets, and laptops constantly try to save battery by putting their WiFi radios to sleep during idle moments. The DTIM period determines how often they are forced to wake back up. With DTIM set to 1 (the default on many routers), devices wake their radios roughly ten times per second, which adds up to meaningful battery drain over a full day.

Apple specifically recommends a DTIM period of 3 in their networking best practices. This lets devices sleep longer between check-ins, significantly extending battery life without any noticeable delay in receiving notifications, messages, or incoming calls.

What you can do

  • Log into your router's admin page and look for "DTIM Period" or "DTIM Interval." It is usually found under advanced wireless settings.
  • Change the value from 1 to 3. This is the setting Apple recommends for networks with iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks.
  • Avoid setting DTIM higher than 3, as some devices may miss time-sensitive notifications or experience delays receiving incoming VoIP calls.
  • If your router has separate settings for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios, set DTIM to 3 on both.
  • Enterprise access points from vendors like Cisco, Aruba, and Ruckus often default to DTIM 1 for legacy compatibility. If you manage these, changing to DTIM 3 can improve battery life for the entire organization.
  • After changing the setting, restart your router and reconnect your devices to pick up the new DTIM value.
