Router Firmware

The software running on your router that keeps your network secure and performing well

What is router firmware?

Firmware is the software built into your router that controls everything it does: managing your WiFi network, directing traffic between devices, enforcing security rules, and connecting you to the internet. It's like the operating system on your computer, but for your router.

Router manufacturers release firmware updates to fix security vulnerabilities, improve performance, add new features, and resolve bugs. Unlike your phone or computer, which typically updates itself, most routers require you to manually check for and install updates. Many people set up their router once and never update it again, sometimes for years.

Why it matters

Outdated router firmware is one of the biggest security risks in a home network. Researchers regularly discover vulnerabilities in router software, and manufacturers release patches to fix them. If your firmware is years old, your router likely has known security holes that attackers can exploit.

Beyond security, outdated firmware can also cause performance problems. Newer firmware often includes fixes for WiFi stability, better handling of multiple devices, improved compatibility with newer gadgets, and support for the latest WiFi standards. Some updates also fix bugs that cause random disconnections or slowdowns that users have been living with unnecessarily.

What you can do

  • Log into your router's admin page (usually at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in your browser) and look for a "Firmware Update" or "Software Update" section. Many routers have a "Check for Updates" button.
  • Enable automatic updates if your router supports it. Newer routers from brands like ASUS, Netgear, and TP-Link offer this option.
  • Check your router manufacturer's support website for your specific model if the built-in updater doesn't find anything. Sometimes updates are posted on the website before they appear in the router's interface.
  • If your router is more than five years old and the manufacturer has stopped releasing updates, consider replacing it. End-of-life routers no longer receive security patches, leaving your network exposed.
  • Write down your router model number (usually on a sticker on the bottom) so you can quickly look up whether updates are available.
  • After updating firmware, verify that your WiFi settings (network name, password, port forwarding rules) are still intact. Most updates preserve your settings, but it's good to double-check.
