Remote Management

Whether your router's admin interface is accessible from the internet

What is remote management?

Remote management is a router setting that lets you access the router's admin page from outside your home network, over the internet. Normally, you can only log into your router when you are connected to your home WiFi or plugged into it with an Ethernet cable. Turning on remote management opens that login page to anyone on the internet who knows (or guesses) your router's public IP address.

Think of it like leaving the key to your house under the doormat, except the doormat is visible to everyone walking by on the street.

Why it matters

When remote management is enabled, automated bots and attackers can find your router's login page by scanning the internet. These bots run around the clock, trying default usernames and passwords on every router they find. If your admin password is weak, or if you never changed it from the factory default, someone could take control of your router within minutes.

Once an attacker controls your router, they can redirect your web traffic to fake websites, spy on your browsing, add your router to a botnet, or change your DNS settings to intercept sensitive data. Many large-scale router compromises, like the VPNFilter malware that infected hundreds of thousands of routers, exploited remote management as an entry point.

What you can do

  • Log into your router and disable remote management (sometimes called "remote access," "web access from WAN," or "remote administration")
  • If you are unsure where the setting is, check your router manufacturer's support site for your specific model
  • Change your router's admin password from the factory default to something strong and unique
  • If you truly need to access your router remotely, use a VPN into your home network instead of exposing the admin page directly
  • Make sure your router's admin page uses HTTPS so your credentials are encrypted even on the local network
  • Keep your router's firmware updated, since vulnerabilities in the admin interface are regularly discovered and patched
