WAN Failover

A backup internet connection that takes over when your primary goes down

What is WAN failover?

WAN failover is a setup where your router has two internet connections instead of one, and automatically switches to the backup if the primary goes down. WAN stands for Wide Area Network, which is just a technical term for your connection to the internet.

Think of it like having a backup generator for your house. Most of the time, you use power from the utility company. But if the power goes out, the generator kicks in so your lights stay on. WAN failover works the same way: if your main internet connection drops, traffic automatically shifts to the backup so you stay online.

Why it matters

For many homes and small offices, an internet outage means everything stops. Video calls drop, point-of-sale systems go offline, security cameras lose their cloud connection, and remote workers cannot do their jobs. Even a brief five-minute outage in the middle of a client presentation or a support call can be costly.

With WAN failover, the switchover typically happens within seconds to a minute, depending on your router. Some connections like active VoIP calls may drop briefly during the transition, but most activity resumes quickly without anyone noticing. For businesses, this kind of resilience can be the difference between a minor blip and a significant disruption.

What you can do

  • Check whether your router supports dual WAN; many prosumer and business routers (UniFi, pfSense, MikroTik, Peplink) have a second WAN port built in
  • The simplest backup connection is a cellular hotspot or a USB LTE/5G modem plugged into your router's second WAN port
  • Some routers can use a phone's USB tethering as a failover connection, which avoids the cost of a separate cellular plan
  • If your router does not have dual WAN, consider a dedicated failover device like a Peplink Balance or a Cradlepoint
  • Configure your router to monitor the primary connection with health checks (ping tests to reliable hosts like 1.1.1.1) so it detects outages quickly
  • Test your failover periodically by unplugging the primary connection and verifying that the backup takes over within a reasonable time

What Network Weather shows you

Network Weather detects whether your router has a backup WAN connection configured and warns you if your network depends on a single internet link with no failover.
